Dr. Mattie Wheelock Roper "Always Remembered, Never Forgotten". She leaves to cherish her
memories: her husband, Rev. Dr. Jasper Roper Jr., her children: Antoinette (Michael) Lacey,
Yolanda Clark, Wanda Jackson, Tony (Kimberlyn) Stafford, Cadel Roper, and Angela (David)
Colson, her siblings: Tom Clark, John (Matilda) Nathan Clark, Diane Clark, and Jeannette (Dr.
Gil) Wright. A special cousin, Doris Bowers and all her grand, great-grand, and great-great
grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Gladys Hudson; father, Al J. Clark;
sister, Rowena Clark; and brothers, Alfred Clark and Cecil Ray Clark.
A special thank you to her grandchildren Telly Roper, Sr., Kennesha Cain, and Dr. Mia Best for
their loving support in her last hours.
Dr. Mattie Roper was dedicated to her family and to her church. Her life began on May 1, 1937,
and ended on November 27, 2024, when God said Well Done, My Child, and called her home. She
was baptized at an early age at New Light Missionary B.C., where she was a member of the choir
and the Deaconess Board. Her membership was then moved to Gethsemane B.C. with her
husband and from there to Liberty Chapel, B.C. There she remained faithfully until her last days
and served in the choir, on the Deaconess Board, and as the church secretary.
Dr. Mattie Roper retired from the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board System. She received a
Doctorate Degree in Theology from the Inter-Baptist Theology Seminary in Houston, Texas. She
also obtained a Doctorate Degree in Divinity from Christian Bible College in Baton Rouge, La. At
Christian Bible College, she held the position of Finance Secretary, and Social Director.
Dr. Mattie was one who loved the LORD and her family.
